I have an old duck hut that I'm going to turn into a rooster hut next year. This hut is 3 x 3 and 4' tall.
Last week I went to inspect the hut and opened up the top, well I didn't think to close it. A few days go by and as I was cleaning up the yard I threw some wire scraps I found into the top of the hut. Unknown to me there was a chicken inside. I don't know which one got more scared the chicken with things "raining" down on her or me when she jumped out squawking for all the world to hear. I look inside and there are three pretty white eggs (I didn't even know she was laying yet).
So I closed it up and thought nothing of it again.
So again today I'm out doing my customary walk of the yard looking for garbage that shouldn't be there. We live in town and on windy days all kinds of stuff gets blown in. So as I'm going around I noticed the ramp that was up covering the door to the duck hut was leaning out a little (I've got a big concrete block in front of it to keep it closed).
So I go over and readjust the block but as I'm doing this, the leghorn comes close to me and gives me the stinkeye. HMMMM that was odd but something told me to look and sure enough that little stinker had managed to slip inside that little space and lay her eggs again!
The door is now nailed shut and just for insurance I nailed the top door down too.
