I built a pen for my peas in the yard using one of those temporary carport frames. I completely covered it with chicken wire, put on the canopy top that covered the top and back then attached ropes and anchored it down with one of those spiraled dog tie out stakes on the two sides. Every thing was fine... until Wednesday. We had sustained winds of 31 mph and they said the gusts were 47 mph (as measure about 15 miles away from here...). I think the winds here may have been a bit higher, it actually moved my hoop house and I never saw that happen before. After I saw that the hoop house moved, I figured I should check on the peafowl. I went into the yard to find their shelter on end reating against a pine tree, the two peacocks wandering in the yard, and no sign of my peahen. I walked over to see if I could get the boys into the dog pen, not covered but I figured it would possibly at least keep them in the yard. My three year old decided to fly up and over my head and fly away.
DH and I got the cover off of the shelter and got it out of the tree, then moved it back to where it was. We came into the house in time for the phone to ring, a neighbor calling to tell us that there was a peacock in their yard. It was the male, and I was able to herd him home. I searched, but no sign of the peahen.
About 5 hours later I looked out to see her walking across the driveway and back into the yard. DH and I were able to walk slowly behind them and herd them back into their pen. It was a major relief to have them home and locked back up!
On another note, I have had a few people stop by to tell me how much they enjoy seeing my peafowl out there. I guess that would explain the increase in traffic on the road that runs along my yard...
