DAY 0... / Hatching has begun!!

Thanks for the advise, I've got the humidity up a little higher now at 55% and the temp at 100 since the fan in my room is always on and seems to be circulating the air in the box via the vent holes. The box is very sturdy and clean so I think the box will be okay. Yes it's considered a desert here but it doesnt feel like a dry hot desert, lots of green and lush mountains so not very desert-like :) I will give my eggs up to 24 days to hatch or start hatching.

Into the 4th day and all is well! Temp is staying at 100 most of the time, and once a day in the early evening it increases itself to 102 for about 1 hour, I believe this is because my bedroom faces the sunset and that when it's warmest in my room. So today I decided to rotate the eggs an extra time during this warmer period to help even out the way they eggs are warm on various sides. Humidity remains between 45-50. But I still intend to raise that to 65% for the last 2 or 3 days of incubation. JUST 12-13 DAYS TO GO, WOO!

i just started one BO egg yesterday in my homemade bator! i cannot have more than that because we are living with my mother in law until we find a house to buy.

That's awesome! I think the whole incubating process is such a good lesson for not only myself but my kids enjoy it too! One day you will be in a home of your own and then you can incubate in larger numbers! It's so fun!

it sure is fun! my mother in law loves the chickens and want us to have more, but i know that isn't feasible until we find a place. we plan to hatch dozens of chicks when we get a new home. i cannot wait!

Good luck... I am still waitin' on eggs, I think these are Obama quail, they eat a lot, poop a lot, but don't show me the goods... GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know in precious time but come on already.... Pickin up a bath of breeders tomorrow am, so the duplex is fulll!! we will see what happens...

My temp was all over the place with my last hatch and we hatched 8 of 8 fertile eggs! It ranged from 93 to 103! Made me crazy. I turned them alot too. 8 to 10 times a day. I currently have Manchurian Gold Jumbos and Jumbo Browns in that I had shipped to me, the temp is much more consistant this time around. Going by weight I do not think the Manchurian will have a very good hatch rate. But we will see on the 7th. If they dont I will try again.

I am so disappointed. I made scrambled eggs for breakfast yesterday and of three i cracked open, only one was fertile. So it had me worried the egg in the bator was infertile. I looked at the egg this morning and I saw no development. i decided to open it and sure enough it is not fertile. :( I may have to lock up my neighbor's roo with my BO for a few days. I am so sad and disappointed!

LOL Obama Quail! hahahaha
Laseterlass: Good Luck with the Manchurians! I hope you get some out of it. I'm glad yours hatched despite the flucuating temps!, its reassuring for me!
Edible_Chicken: Oh I'm so sorry! I know the feeling well. Just try again though! borrow the roo for a few days and keep them in a pen together. Take a day to mourn the loss/infirtile attempt, and then try try again! :)
