Hi all, I'm new here. I started incubating my 6 chicken eggs last night. I'm in Australia so it's winter and took a bit of work to get the temperature in the incubator right. I worked out that for at least an hour, the temp was 49 Celcius (120 Fahrenheit) so am so worried they are ruined :( When I discovered this I took the lid off and cooled them down before putting them back in at the correct temp. Do you think there is any hope?

Oh wow that is really hot. You could try continuing to incubate them and candling after 7 days to see if anything made it. That is probably what I would do unless you are in a rush to get chicks.

Welcome to the forum by the way! :thumbsup

That's what I was afraid of :( Thank you so much. Yes I will continue to incubate and will check in a week. So annoyed. I had 3 Easter Eggers in there too, my kids were so excited. I thought being Day 1, there wouldn't be any growth but unsure how high it would need to be to 'cook' them so to speak.

Yes, even though no embryo had developed the increased temperature could have killed off the chances of cell division happening. Hopefully it was not hot long enough to change the internal temperature of the egg too much though. In which case they could be fine. Eggs are mostly water which is relatively resistant to changes in temperature. It is worth a try to see if they are able to develop. After you candle them in a week you will know. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice. I will certainly let you all know how it goes! I will end up buying some chicks now anyway so if these hatch it will be a bonus. I wish I'd spent more money on a better incubator though.

120F for an hour, I bet you cooked them. Candle at day 7-8 to be sure. But don't get your hopes up.
