Its day 17 and 1 out of 12 eggs survived as far as ive checked before I put the egg in lockdown on day 14, Theres no pips zips or anything going on, the egg is just being an egg, I really have the urge to just candle the egg, will it be okay if I candled for a few seconds or should I just leave the egg, I havent done anything other than fill water through the vent. The temp is 37.1 C which is 98.78 F.

I incubate at around 37.8-38C. Was your temperature that low throughout incubation? I would try and increase it slightly.

I would go ahead and candle to see what's going on. I get eggs out of my incubator all the time during 'lockdown' to take a peek and see when things are starting to happen. Check to see if the air cell has drawn down on one side. External pips are difficult to see on these eggs too. Mine usually hatch on day 18 so there's hope for it yet. :fl

That is too low. It's 37.5C for duck eggs and 37.7C for chicken and other eggs. It's also a good idea to have an independent thermometer that you calibrate against a medical grade thermometer as incubators are often inaccurate in their temperature readings. Here's an article explaining how to calibrate a thermometer and hygrometer:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...incubator-thermometers-and-hygrometers.73634/

And this is an excellent article about quail egg candling:

By day 17 the egg should look completely dark inside other than the light space at the fat end where the air cell is.

Im using a cheap little 7 egg incubator, this is my first time so I didnt want to make a big investment yet.
