My broody is on day 19 with her eggs. I think she accidentally stepped on one and crushed the shell on one side this morning. The internal membrane is intact, and she is still sitting on it. I could see the chick moving in the membrane.

Anyone have this happen, not intervene, and baby still hatch?

Aw! I'm so sorry. Did she eat it? Watch her close.

I honestly think it was a series of unfortunate events beginning with her accidentally crushing it. When I found the egg cracked she was still sitting on it, and when I went back to check, she had rotated the eggs, and I think in moving the cracked egg, she got the membrane. She did not peck the baby at all, it just bled out from the membrane being damaged, and it was still under her with the other eggs. I checked the other 2 eggs under her and 1 is internally pipped and the other is too dark to see, but the air cell hasn't pulled down, so I'm not too hopeful about that one. Fingers crossed she can hatch out 1 healthy baby!

That's too bad. I'm sorry. You're right, she probably accidentally punctured it while turning. Did you remove it? Hopefully at least one hatches. Keep us posted.

Yes, I removed it right away. I had to run into Tractor Supply, and I had my oldest daughter with me- she’s the one who convinced me to let this broody sit to begin with, and she ended up leaving with 2 EE and 2 California White chicks. I was going to sneak them under tonight, but wanted to see how our broody reacted. She absolutely loves them, and wanted them right away! They were pecking her wattles and eyes and she was sooooo patient with them. I’m not worried about the egg that should hatch tomorrow, we are in quite a heat wave, so it’ll hatch even if she gets up to tend the others. I’m glad I decided to get her a couple extra chicks!

Aw! That's so sweet. I'm glad your hen accepted them. Pics when she brings them all outside! ❤

The egg hatched this morning! She is still on the nest, and I was wondering why, so I looked at that last egg and the last egg is also pipped! I thought for sure it was not viable
