Day 21-22 Incubation of 36 welsummers UPDATE

Lol you and me both and wow a buck a dozen! Where are you? Lol BC I want to show up and beg this farmer for the same deal lol unless shipping would be possible... Hatching is a very serious addiction I've done one hatch and have two eggs all I had gotten from a friend in the incubator before my first girls have started to lay. But DH2B can't say anything BC hatching was his idea ;) lol

Hey everyone. So I went ahead with the assisted. Last night was a long night! So the bird i dubbed surgio (surgery

) seemed okay but as I said had not progressed in day 21 or 22. The inner membrane appeared transparent so I felt great about that. So as I worked the shell and membranes back things went well. Until he decided to try and break loose. He kicked most of the shell I had yet investigated, about 1/4. Well lo and behold there was a huge rush of blood. So here is where I picked up my speed and worked quickly. I got all membrane and shell off and saw that the cord was bleeding near the shell and he had a TINY and I mean tiny amount of yolk that was unabsorbed. So I made a rash, split second decision to tie both off and clip. So last night he was weak. I figured because he was early and had not had to do the work of hatching. Finally at around 3 I decided there was nothing more I could do for him. Well I woke up to a seemingly very healthy surgio. Plus another chick, one more zipper and 2 pipers. So if these pips hatch I will have 7 that have hatched thus far. I am going to let the others sit for a day or two and see what happens.
Last night my first two hatches were pecking at the place I tied off surgio so I moved them to the brooder. They are doing great today.
I just noticed someone asked if my eggs were shipped. They were not. One of the local farmers (who i got bunnies and am getting 2 goats from) sold them to me for a buck a dozen.

Thank you all for yoyr suggestions and kind words. It is greatly appreciated. Oh and last thing, the zipper I woke up to was malaligned in the same place as surgio but hatched 100% unassisted!! I am addicted to hatching. I have learned so much in such a short period. I love this.

Congrats on the hatchers!!! Yes, hatching is very addicting. I have no more room for newbies, so I am done hatching for the year, but man, I wish someone would hire me to hatch for them....lol

We are rapidly growing our "farm". I live in the upper peninsula of michigan. Almost as far north as you can get :) He is a wonderful man. Very good with his animals also.

I candled again and noticed one had liquid in the air cell. I made a hole to drain the water but thw chick did not respond. There was no internal pip but the chick seemed fully developed. The majority of the yolk sac was absorbed or else it ruptured but I could not tell. Why would a chick die this late in the game? I am so worried about the rest. There are still 14 unpiped. Ugh this is so sad. I also have two that are "sticky". The two that hatched @6am and 1pm today. The one that hatched at noon is fine despite a leg issue from malalignment. Any advice? I am so torn up right now! Poor babies

There are many reasons why. I have my suspicions. What kind of incubator are you using and what was your humidity for the firsst 17 days? The pic that showed the one's leg in the air cell-the air cells looked a little smaller than average for hatch. I would almost say if the others haven't pipped to try hatching them out in cutdown cartons so that they are upright. If you have wet sticky chicks and excess moisture in the eggs I would conclude the eggs didn't loose enough moisture.

The one with the leg issue-what is the issue?

The temp and humidity were pretty steady the first 17 days. The temp was around 37.5'c and the humidity was at 55%. The temp was the same pretty much always. There were a few humid days where the incubator was affected. The humidity spiked, but I recovered it fairly quickly. I am not sure the brand of the incubator but will send a pic. The chick with the leg issue is the second one who hatched on its own in a malaligned position. The "claws" or "toes" seem weak. On one foot only. He stands and is steady but when it trys to step it stumbles.

400

This is a 48 egg incubator from ebay. It seems cheap but gets the job done.

My nephew just bought one of those.

I would run humdity at 30-40% (I personally prefer 30-35%, but I have a styro) and monitor the air cells for growth. I believe anything over 45% is too high. I'm a big pusher for low humidity incubations because I see so many use 50%+ and drown the chicks. With the low humidity method and checking the air cells you have a guide as to how to adjust for your eggs. I use this method: http://letsraisechickens.weebly.com...anuals-understanding-and-controlling-humidity
I just walked my sister through the low humidity method with that bator and her eggs just started hatching last night.

His toes aren't curled are they?

Thank you! I will bookmark that page as I think we will start another batch soon. His toes look okay, just seem flaccid. It seems like the joint in his leg is weak like he cannot stand straight on that side? My uncle is going to give us some polish mixes. I am hoping now that I learned a bit I will get a better hatch. I will read that article. Thanks again :)

It's possibly a slipped hock...but I have no experience with that. I hope you'll report on your next hatch too and wish you better luck!
