We are only going to have one chick after all. One egg had a fully formed chick or very close, but the egg was all broken open under the hen. The last egg was just rotten inside, with no clearly developed chick.
So, we have this little nugget, who we are calling Pip for now, and we'll go with Pippa if it turns out to be a girl. I'm a Dickens fan, so he's sort of named after the character in Great Expectations. Yes, I am a total dork.
If it's a boy, we'll have to find a home for him. I just can't eat our very first chick...later I will be okay with using others for food, but not this one. Our hen Comet is a power layer - maybe we'll do some of her eggs in a month or so. Opal is being a great adoptive momma - she's a natural.
Little Pip is 4 days old now, and seems to be doing well - and so darn cute we can hardly stand it!!
Mommy, who is that crazy lady with the flashy thing?
