My broody is sitting on 10 eggs and it is day 21. Five are from Kentucky and five are local. I'm beginning to worry that none will hatch. I don't want to bother her but the suspense is killing me. After the chicks hatch she will go into the broody coop and I will let her out into the yard with the flock. She was a good broody last year and raised 6 chicks, so I am hoping these eggs hatch. All eggs are from good breeders so I'm hoping it is ok.

When you receive shipped eggs you should candle them to make sure the air shells are not damaged. If they are too damaged they will not develop. I have also received eggs that were completely scrambled inside from whatever game the postal service was playing with the box.

I was off on the dates, today is day 21 and one of the chicks hatched yesterday. One of the shipped ones. I went in the coop this morning, and Sissy stood up and I saw she was standing on the chick. It looked dead. I took it out and had it against my chest for about 10 minutes, hoping it wasn't and crying, and it suddenly perked up and started chirping. Does this happen often? I don't want the chick to die, and I have a brooder set up just in case, but I don't want to take it out just yet. I know I am over-reacting, but I want every chick.

I usually just warm them up if they are cold and put them back unless they are being attacked. Being stepped on or kicked is really common. A chicken really can't see exactly where it is stepping. That is why when it scratches it has to then take a step back to see if it's exposed anything. If the baby doesn't cry it usually doesn't know it's standing on it.

Thanks everyone. Floof, as my son named the chick, is up and running around on top of mom, but she is the only hatched one. I know the blue wheaten eggs were fresh the day I got them, I picked them up, but the others were older. Shouldn't they hatch around the same time though?

Yes, they should as long as they were set the same time. Have you candled them yet?
