Well I thought I had killed it after that initial "help" and the blood. I peeked into her shell, and thought "Ow crap, her eye is falling out!", ..... but it turned out to be her beak, which she started opening and closing. So I removed the rest of her shell. She is still in the membrane, so I wrapped her in a paper towel and put her in the incubator, like Basia suggested. She is chirping still, which seems good.
Do you think I should wrap the wet paper towel more thoroughly around her?
I am going to wait around for a response, and then I think I'll leave the house for a few hours, so I am not tempted to touch her anymore.
You did good!
check the paper towel about every 1-2 hours to be sure it isn't getting "cool"... if so.. wet a new one and change her "dressing".
(it will let you monitor her progress too)
If the membrane starts to dry where it is exposed then you can wrap her a bit more... you will have to judge it.
Take a deep breath... *BIG HUG*
I have to get some sleep or I would stay here with you.
Just remember that she needs time. As long as the warm moisture is there she should be able to get herself out when she is ready. Talk to her and encourage her. I'll check back in a few hours.
i just have to say that this community is so awesome!
it really touches my heart that people care so much. i actually have tears in my eyes and these aren't even my chicks!
yea BYC folks!
(and josie, do keep posting because like everyone else i'm waiting on pins and needles to see what happens next!)
Ahhhh sweetie ... This is a pain most of us know and we feel it with you. (literally... chest squeezing... stomach turning... lump in the throat and tears)
Every time something like this happens we learn more. Remember: even chicks with a hen can pip and not make it. You tried and I am sure "having mommy" where she could feel you was comforting!
