We had a broody hatch chicks this morning. She had pooped all over them so some had to be tossed because they got infected and were nasty inside. I have one egg left I tried to candle but cant see anything at all. It looks like it might be my welsummer's egg or my maran's (hers are more colored like the wels). Usually I can at least see the air sac. I'm not seeing anything and I was in a dark closet.

How do I make sure whether this egg is good or not? No pips yet. She currently has 2 eggs under her with large pips working on getting out.

I smell them. Bad eggs will smell rotten after 20 days. I'd put it back under her and wait. If it doesn't hatch by the time she leaves the nest in 2 days I would just toss it very carefully.

Sometimes you can hear movement and peeping, and sometimes if you gently shake an egg, if it's bad, you will feel it clunk in there. Handle all potential egg bombs carefully and at your own risk.

Well one of the other eggs definitely smelled. Everyone has hatched and no pip in this one. I very gently shook it and felt like something moving in there. Like it was bad maybe. Too much movement...I'm pretty sure a full size chick wouldn't have movement like that.

If you feel it moving back and forth it generally isn't any good. Live chicks don't move back and forth in the shell, they fill up the egg pretty fully.
