Day 27 - started to pip

We’ve got one external pip!!

The incubator stopped working last night! It overheated to about 39°c and then fluctuated between 34-39 and I thought they were gonners for sure! The fan stopped working and the humidity stopped being circulated, so I started misting again to make sure it wasn’t too dry.
I’ve now covered the base of the incubator with pools of water, don’t want to mist once it’s pipped, so fingers crossed that keeps the environment ideal for them!!
Barely slept a wink last night I kept my ear trained for the incubator overheating alarm 😂

A 4th grader showed up in my high school science classroom last week with big eyes and a small bucket with something wrapped in a towel. Inside the towel she had a half dead baby mallard and two mallard eggs, one with a large pip. She had been watching a wild duck who had made a nest in the neighbors yard. Most of the ducklings had hatched by the day before and mom had marched off with them leaving three eggs. She left them until morning hoping mommy mallard would return. Without heat, one baby hatched and one was trying. I put everyone in my incubator (and gave the weak, hatched baby sugar water and electrolytes). The pipped egg hatched at lunch, the third egg hatched two days later. All three are doing great now. I tell this story to show how tough they are. In the wild babies hatch in the heat of summer and during cool spring nights. I bet yours will be fine! Hope it goes well. :fl
