So, I was candling my 5 day-along Silkies, and I hit one with the flashlight. It was hard enough that a pencil eraser size of the shell fell off just below the air sac. The membrane is still intact and there was no bleeding or any leakage. I want to put wax over it, but with the membrane exposed, will it be ok? This is my first time ever incubating eggs and I feel totally horrible. I know that not all eggs will make it, but I would feel like this one dying would be my fault :(

There are a few posts on here with people who had the same issue but the chicks came out just fine, some of the suggestions were using white crayon wax because they are non toxic and not dyed, someone else used birthday candle wax. All the posts said that the eggs hatched just fine one they were repaired

Thanks so much! I ended up waxing using an unscented, white tea light candle. I'll wait a few days and (carefully) candle the egg again to see if it's ok. I've seen some of the damage others have had and hatched successfully... hope I'm a success story as well :)

Day 10 and "she" is still doing fine (small egg, so I've been calling it a she). Just candled again and she's dancing up a storm in there! Halfway to hatch, still keeping my fingers crossed!

Happy birthday America! Annnnnd... AVA!!! She made it! Pipped at 6:30ish this morning, just finished kicking off the last piece! She has a great set of lungs on her too! LOL!

She did great with the wax on the shell, pipped right next to it then right on across it she went! Now the only problem is figuring out if she IS a "she"... guess I'll know if she crows one day ;)
