Any clue what we can do to protect our chickens from birds of prey in a rotational grazing system. We built a 8' X 8' open bottom layer coop (salatin style) that has a door for the chickens to get out into a good sized run. We move it every few days. Yesterday afternoon when i went to close up the coop there were chickens every where. Total we lost 10 chickens 5 taken away 5 left in the run. The dead ones we found in the coop had wounds to there back. I believe that eagles or osprey came in for a pass and just grabbed what they could. Am i totally off with my thoughts?? The only thing that surprised me if it was an eagle or osprey was that there wounded animals left to die. I am going to try fishing line with flash tape and pie plates tied to it strung across the run t try to scare/deture the birds. Any other thoughts or remedies are greatly appreciated.
