I have a coop and run for my ducks but it seems a bit small for them. The current run I have has fencing on the bottom and top so predators can't access it. The coop is inaccessible at night when I shut them in,

During the day I was thinking of adding some space to the run. I was just thinking of pounding in some metal fence posts and using chicken wire nothing fancy. Is this adequate for them in the day?

Mine are about 2 months old now, so they aren't full grown but aren't tiny either.

Our Day Pen has 2"x3" coated woven wire top and sides with coated chain link across the bottom, and one inch coated chicken wire across the bottom 2 feet on the sides. That's because during the day we may be visited by domestic cats, dogs, and foxes (that like to jump). Not to mention hawks.

Chicken wire is useful for confining poultry and waterfowl, but not as predator protection, from what I have seen and read.

I understand the concern of labor and expense. The coated woven wire, or even uncoated, is less expensive than metal hardware cloth, though. Some folks make skirts around their pens to prevent things digging in. Seems to me a stray dog could get under a fence in a fairly short time, if no one was around to stop it.

Once a neighbor's two Rottweillers busted loose and came to visit. I am so glad the ducks were locked into their day pen, with the fencing we have. Really glad. I was in the house without my shoes on . . . I got out as quickly as I could, and literally led the dogs by the collar over to the corner of my deck where I happened to have some rope, and tied them to my deck. I could not call them off away from the pen, I had to grab their collars.

The fence saved the flock that day. Broad daylight.
