DE Powder

I have a 4x4 coop off the ground with a 4x4 run underneath and I have just added another 8x4 run. The Coop and 4x4 run are all shelter but the 8' run is exposed somewhat to weather, How often would you reapply DE in the coop, 4x4 and then in the 8x4 run? I do not have any problems yet and would like to stay that way. Also how do you monitor how much de that are digesting off the ground as they scratch and peck around.

Periodically, I toss some DE onto the shavings and poop. Where I use DE is in the feed. That way the DE is in the poop to help control flies. Turning the shavings and poop periodically will allow it all to dry and not generate ammonia so much. My coop is well ventilated so that helps with the odor as well.

I don't concern myself with what they ingest when they peck the ground. I probably don't want to know.
