And as a side note, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones... I just called my feed store back, and YES they DO carry food grade DE!!! YAY!!

food grade can be ingested by humans as well. the other stuff is very toxic!! please use food grade

Also, part two of your question - for future reference, DE will not "go bad". Don't use your old pool stuff because it's not food grade. But if you get a BIG bag of the food grade stuff, you don't have to worry about it rotting or becoming ineffective.
