I remember some 1950s training video with the roosters getting stretched out and a very thin blunted rod in its trachea ~ 16-18cm and poking a hole in the tympaniform membrane without stabbing out the front of the neck…
Maybe it was some old way of doing the de-crowing method with or without cauterization.

“The Pioneer Way” ?

De-crow surgery
A large amount of the lateral wall of the syrinx was removed allowing air to flow into the intraclavicular air sac from the bronchi and trachea.

According to this link, it was done to figure out which tissues were needed to make the sounds when they crowed.

And it didn't work.
According to the link the metal mesh method worked as intended with no problems for the birds.
The other methods did not work.
And before anyone starts freaking out, metal meshes are used every day to open the arteries of those who had an heart attack and they save millions of lives. They are not a medieval form of torture.

True, but stents are required in the patients they are implanted in, AND the patients give their consent prior to implantation.

I believe if a chicken was smart enough to be able to choose between getting his voice muffled with fine medical technology and brute internal or external decapitation, I guess very few would chose death.
We make capons in a brutal way, we sterilize our pets without their consent, we cut puppies ears or tail just four our aesthetical wishes, we select congenital deformities and make breeds full of health issues just because we like the deformed look. We do a lot of terrible tings to animals for our own convenience (you don't want your cat to pee everywhere? Cut his nuts! You want a ferret but you don't want it to smell? Cut its glands off!), the stent method for devoicing rooster isn't really all this bad, it's not something anyone do for look but it's meant to save the rooster life.

The Pioneer Rooster Decrow procedure does not require stents or mesh, and these materials are not necessary for the modification to be effective. While the procedure itself is straightforward, performing it can be challenging due to the complexity of the technique and the use of outdated technology and equipment. However, new technologies can make the procedure faster and more effective. Despite the invasiveness of the modification, it is essential to prevent community nuisance ordinances and to avoid detection of roosters.
