Soft eggs—now no eggs?

Hi there. I have a 8 month old olive egger. She was laying pretty consistently (about 1 a day) and then a few days ago.. I went into the coop and noticed a soft shell egged AND a yolk (exposed yolk) on their roost shelf! After going through my night camera footage, it seemed my olive egger laid it after going to bed. So odd. The next day, she did the same thing, a soft shelled egg and a yolk, but in the nesting box. Still, at night.

Now she’s not laying at all. Is this just part of her body figuring out what to do? This is my first flock. Thank you in advance!

If these are her first eggs, it is probably just her getting into sync with her system. I have had this hapen several times. But if she is some months into laying it could be something to worry about

You can provide a dish of crushed oyster shells for your birds if you have not already. Pullets/hens need calcium to form egg shells. Some pullets/hens ability to absorb calcium from food are better than the others, thus the need to provide extra calcium source for the birds that need it.

Besides giving oyster shell in a separate bowl and giving back the eggshells, you could try to give her human calcium tablets , 1 a day for one week. Besides that there is not much you can do. This can only help if she has a calcium deficiency.

The extra egg yolk is very strange, not something I have seen here before. Sounds like an overproduction her ‘wrapping up’ system can’t handle.

Hope for the best. Many chickens grow over a temporary egg-laying problem. But not all. Sometimes a soft egg breaks inside a chickens body and causes an infection. Egg yolk problems are often seen with breeds that are bred for maximum production. Breeds that do 1 egg a day are not bred for longevity.
