DE... what is it?

I asked and have read on here, and everyone says to get DE to keep the coop fresh etc. I was at 4 feed stores and one tractor supply store today within a 1 hour radias of my house in Florida and no one knew what I was talking about. Is there anyone out there that can help. Most of them told me to pick up lime and put in our coop. Any thoughts on that? Newbie needs help.
