Hi, I have a question about DE. I was looking up some Homeopathic flea & tick prevention & in the articale it talked about sprinkling DE outside your house, but the stuff you buy at a pool store.
I remember someone posting on here its not the same stuff as the DE you use for chickens. & I'm all confused about it now.:|

yes there are grades of de. chemical grade which is what you would get for your pool. this is cheaper and alot easier to get. But it is not suitable to Eat! however if you are using it for insect control around your house it's fine. The other is food grade. This anything including you can eat, we use it in the feed, both to keep it fresh and bug free. also we use it in the coop and dust boxes to keep the birds bug and parisite free. food grade is more expensive and almost always needs to be orderd. It will say Food grade on it. If it dosn't it prolly isn't. the good news is a little gose a long way.

hope this was helpful

Hi flip.
Thanks a Bunch. yes it was Very helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to write. I will make sure when I go looking it says. Food Grade on it.
I do not have alot of problems with bugs, but with the chickens coming I want to make sure it stays that way with out having to use chemicals.
YOU ROCK!

Just to make things more confusing.... the food grade DE often says "Chemical Codex food grade " on it. Just make sure it's not the kind for pools or for garden pest control.

expect to get a lot of wierd looks when you ask for it. I must have gone to 15 places looking for it. finally 1 place was able to get it. It took a little longer than if I ordered it online but I didn't have to pay shipping (which seems to cost more than the DE) Also SeaChick is right It might say chemical codex food grade on it. Thats fine as long as it says food grade.

Thanks Flip & Seachick, I'm going out tomorrow to check out a few feed stores & give them calls. Who knows I might get lucky? Now only if this rain was not going to hit us I could of worked on my coop, but Long Island is going to float away soon.

Presto, You might call around first. None of my lcoal stores carry it but I foudn one who would special-order the "Chemical Codex Food Grade DE" for me. I have to get a 50# bag, it was like $30 or so.... but with 6 chickens it will last me 5 years! I use it all the time and have barely made a dent in it since last fall.
