Harpo,
I'm sorry to hear this happened. It's good your son is taking it so well.
I've lost a few quail recently this way.
What causes a chick to pip low/ breech?

I had 2 quail do this, one I was able to help, the other I didn't jump in soon enough.

My problem was that the temperature was too high. I lost 4 chicks because of the heat. It was 102 in my incubator, but the thermometer said 100 so now I have my thermometer reading 97 degrees, and I know that the actual temp is 99 degrees.

Hey Pete,

we started with 18 candled after a week and 3 were infertile giving us 15.

They went to 22 days and thought all dead so cracked one which ended up being Hardy and other fully hatchd before he was out - they're doing great...

It went day 23 and we got 5 pips that were progressing... day 24 and the rest have done nothing.

Am going to clean out the bator - crack some open and have a look - carefully as I now have a stinker

Thank you so much for your advise - hoping the next batch is more successful with all I learnt!!!!!

Just did the egg-topsy and boy we were close!

From 18 set 15 were viable...

2 hatched, 1 quit rather early big yolk, 2 a little later as they had smaller yolks the remaining 10 were perfectly formed with no yolk at all... had the humidity been lower for the first 18 days I'm sure we would have had an amazing result first time round!!!!

This egg-topsy wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and recommend doing it yourselves to gain knowledge as pete55 said...

I didn't find it depressing - it in fact gave me a boost. Knowledge is power they say...

With a little fine tuning I'm sure we'll have much better results next time.

Hi

I think you're absolutely right and just a little more fine tuning required. I was just like everyone else years ago and getting upset over failed results. Gradually I learnt by trial and error until I had the skills to get it right. You wouldnt believe how many I use to lose and feel I'd failed.

There's lots of links on our website for incubation information if you want to read more
