Hi all we were very happy to have our broody hatch out 4 chicks, and she moved into the dog crate we originally wanted her to Set in..... Temps here are 50's maybe upper 40's and temps just jumped to 80's from 60's 1 day ago--- so first nice day Momma was showing her chicks around the yard no problem-- She settled in tight at bedtime in the dogcrate in straw--- BUT NEXT AM my daughter was horrified to find one little chick dead in the nesting straw-- no visible trauma JUST dead!!!

What could have gone wrong ideas? Help? I want them out with the Flock not indoors in the House (which I am not sure will help)....

There are a number of possibilities. She could have had some internal defect or could have been killed accidentally. Sometimes things go wrong. I see no reason not to do as you had planned and have them with the flock.

OK thanks, that is what my instinct is telling me, now I just have to convince my distraught family (the brood is outside now just hustling around the chicken yard, mama is careful and hasnt taken them out under the fence yet ...
