This morning they all seemed ok, come back this afternoon and found one dead on its back and they are all older birds. What may have happened? This is my first attempt at meat birds.
looks like it's neck is snapped, like previously mentioned. it's common for chicks to die though so it could have just been one of those cases. are the other chicks acting fine?
Everybody else seems fine, what could have snapped its neck? It was stiff when I picked it up, this bird I picked up last sunday and they were 3 weeks old they said at TSC then.
well it hasn't happened to me but I've had friends who had a large number of chicks, they got excited and one got pushed around/trampled and somehow broke it's neck. also if there's anything sort of high that it could have got onto and fallen off?
possibly the feeder but it doesn't look that tall, I'm thinking maybe the chicks got too excited and pushy and this chick was just a victum. watch out for your barred rock chicks though, when the cornish x get too much bigger than them it could be dangerous
Meat birds will just haul off and die on you for no apparent reason. I'm sure heat's not a problem there now, but when temps rise significantly, so does mortality. Once they're past about 40 days, seems that heart attacks and respiratory failure are the main culprits.
