Dead Chicken

I was inside all day today cleaning up from Christmas. When I came outside to put my chickens away for the first time all day I found the fence to the run torn down and all of the chickens outside the fence. I counted them, and only found 7. I should’ve had 8, so I kept searching and eventually found a pile of feathers and then another and I followed the trail until I found the body. There was no physical damage visible besides some missing feathers and some blood on the ground. It was not eaten at all. What could’ve done this?

I live in Ohio. Food is scare for animals since it’s winter. I thought whatever killed it would’ve had a nice meal.

Could be fox, owl, hawk or coyote. Maybe something scared the predator off before eating much of the kill. Here is a resource for predator proofing.

I’m going to say dog. They can be big and heavy enough to just bend down chicken wire. What kind of posts do you have what kind of wire for your run. Pictures may give us the answer.
