Hello everyone,

I have utilized the site for much research and now happy to have joined but I need immediate help with my chicken problem.

Setting: 4 young chickens (2 silkies, 1 easter egger, 1 welsummer) lived in basically a 4ft high 6ft sided square box. Sunday morning when I checked on them one of my silkies was dead and on the outside of the coop. Just looked smashed into the ground like road kill. I didn't study the corps too much because there wasn't much to look at, basically a big pile of feathers. I did notice that outside the coop on the opposite side were 3 long black feather with a tinge or brown. I used an online site to identify the feather and the closest thing I could find was a juvenile bald eagle. I assumed I may have forgot to put this one up the evening before but felt quite sure I did but couldn't find any entry points and couldn't understand why she would be outside the coop.

Monday morning OMG - This was an attack from hell. Of the 3 chickens left I found 1 dead inside the coop with its head missing and mauled. I found parts of another in atleast 10 different spots around the yard. Found 1 leg inside the fence (the run area attached to the coop but put birds up in the evening) and the other leg outside the fence. I found part of an instestine just laying by itself as well as a bone with no teeth marks as if something just pulled it apart.

My other chicken is gone completely though she was only about a 4 month old silkie. I found her white feathers leading from the coop and in the corner of the fence there were feather up the fence and one sitting right no top of the fence post so something climbed the fence with her. A board was pulled out just under the roof exposing a gap of about 4 inches high and maybe 6 inches wide. This was definitely the way in and out because there are feather parts trailing from it.

Inside the coop besides the dead chicken there are feather slung everywhere like a lawnmower ran over them. So in researching what killed my chickens it sounded like a raccoon at first but said they come every 5-7 days and this was back to back. Many animals sounded like possibilities but I am confused, any advice.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! So sorry about your poor birds, what a horrible thing for you to find. I hope you are able to identify and deal with the culprit, you'll want to post on the Predators section for help with id and trapping etc https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/13/predators-and-pests Raccoons will return more than one night in a row once they know there is prey available.

This must have been quite traumatic for you. Here is a link to our Chicken Predators page that goes thru the different critters that may be causing trouble. And I believe these articles will help you to identify by how the chickens were found dead, as to who the culprit is....

Also, follow the link that Kelsie has provided as well. Maybe someone there can help you with this.

I am so sorry.

So sorry to hear about your losses. Were your birds inside a pen or coop? Covered or uncovered? Was the box wooden with hardware cloth or chicken wire covering it? Is your coop tightly closed when you are not there?

You could easily have had several predators and not just one. If one predator can get in, so can others. You might want to spend some time figuring out how to predator-proof your housing before getting any more birds, as once predators have found food they will come back (and if you kill them others will come to take their place).

Good luck.

Welcome to BYC. It sounds as if there may have been attacks from two different predators. First kill sounds like a raptor, and second sounds like the work of a raccoon. Bottom line is that you need to build an impregnable coop prior to getting more birds. Whatever is doing the killing will return. Good luck.

Sounds like raccoons, they will pull chickens through the fenced in area that they can get their paws through. I suggest using a chain link fence for the run with 1/2 " hardware clothe around the bottom of the fence and in the ground about a foot deep. I have mine on the inside of the fence leaning outward. Use chicken wire or heavier wire on top of the run. If you are having that much trouble with predators, you could put electric wire toward the top so they can't climb on top of the run.

My sons were attacked by raccoons last year and they came everyday. so after the first one came they set out a trap and caught a lot of them. I guess it brought the family. They don't have and raccoon problems anymore. yet, anyways.
