I'm not sure what the cost is - I remember someone telling me that here in Maine they'll do it for free. I'd just check with them I guess - it might be something where it's in their best interest to have an understanding of what's going on with local chicken flocks, and also for outreach purposes when similar questions come up. Then again, if it's not something immediately obvious I assume there would be some lab work involved which someone's going to have to pay for. Maybe they have it in their budget already.
 
thank you so much for your help. I have today noticed something odd about two of the blue cochins, there is a white area on the comb where it meets the skull, none of the others have it. Could this mean something as far as an illness? your help is really appreciated. donna

My experience is that occasionally my hens or roosters will get a tiny bit of a almost yeasty bit of stuff on their combs. Just a tiny bit - usually close to their skin where their skin oils are. I've never had any problems with it, but ruling out the pox, and then perhaps a picture, would be helpful.
