Posted another thread this a.m. about her. Broody Cochin hen, fine last night, just died now. She was sitting on eggs that didn't hatch for 21 days around beginning of April. Then became broody again a week ago. Ate some sunflowers seeds from my hand last night, clucking away. Can they starve to death while being broody? She did come out every day for food, water and a dust bath?

RIP Amelia.

Brooding can be very debilitating, and some hens do starve themselves to death. Another common problem is excessive infestation with mites that can make broody hens so anemic that they die. Sorry for your loss.

Thank you. No mites in the coop as we check after dark. Nothing on her, either. I think it all was too much for her. Obviously she wasn't eating enough and 3 times broody took too much from her.
