The darker poops....are they greasy looking and stinky? If so, these are the cecal poops. They will poop these types of poops out a few times a day. As long as they are pooping out the regular drier poops with a white cap on them, things should be fine.

Yes. Thanks for explanation, now I know what that kind of poop is called.
For some reason I wasn't quite comfortable googling quail poop kinds.

So, update on this. In the same cage, I noticed another female who was light in features on the back and chest. It looked sick, so I transferred it to the other (higher sitting) cage, the male there is not as mating-aggressive too.
I noticed it was limping a bit and when I inspected her feet, this is what I found (see images attached). I put some blue cote on it but I do not know if that will help.
I inspected some other females and did not see the same footing problems.

Any ideas what this could be due to? I know the wire can be hard on their feet but they never had these problems before..

Bumblefoot. There are few things less enjoyable than dealing with this infection. I have little personal experience with it but several other members here can give you better directions. I would suggest if you keep birds over wire you read through the Tatanka Breeders club thread. They are some of the largest bodied coturnix around and are much more prone to bumblefoot so the birds require "foot maintenance" over their lives and descriptions are given in that thread how to do preventive maintenance for birds kept on wire.

dc, thanks for the tip. I will search around and see what I can do.

dimi do you have a place for your quail to rest their feet? Something as simple as a piece of wood can give them a place to rest their feed from constant wire walking. If they have a place to dust bathe that can also help give their feet a break.

Sill, yes, I did put a piece of wood in the cage couple of month ago and she still got bumble foot. I am re-thinking the cage architecture - I am planning to change the flooring from metal grid to bit finer plastic grid. Hopefully that'll help.
