He could've died and the hens did it... Or it could be a possum or weasel. If it was a predator, it will be back so I'd set up a trap.

I'm so sorry for the loss Hoping your neighbor is kind to you for taking care of his animals and is understanding with this loss.

I have a friend who has a coop similar with some spaces between the boards. He had welded wire stapled over the wood.
