Dead Rooster..

My favorite rooster named Dominique (a barred rock, ironically) was found dead in the coop when we went for eggs. All the other hens are OK though. We saw our neighbors dog running around the coop at the same time he was dead. No marks or blood on him. Next, we saw the dog behind our ac unit with a hen in its mouth. The hen is OK and this isn't the first time the dog has messed with my flock. I'm sick and tired of this because my neighbors do not watch their dog and its always on my lawn. What can I do about this? This needs to be stopped and I don't want the dog put down because its the owners fault, not the dogs.
First call I would be making is to City, township ANIMAL CONTROL. they have the ability to fine and lock the dog up. I believe that every where has leash laws. Additionally, the killing of livestock is illegal in many states.

Find out and utilize your legal rights before doing anything else.

Additionally, you can re-coup your financial loses by sending his owners a bill. Not just the cost of the hen and Cock either you can calculate the estimated cash cost of the eggs and or chicks that hen would have produced.

I understand your frustration. I am the owner of a dog. In fact, I have always owned dogs... everything from Rottweilers & Pitbulls to Poodles, my dogs are always rescue animals. I currently own a Cocker Spaniel. However, my dogs are always leased, kenneled or cabled. It is unfortunate that you have such irresponsible neighbors.
It is sad because it isn't the pups fault it's his owners fault for not caring for their animal.

I wish you the best of luck and I am very sorry for your loses. I hope this information is helpful

Your first responsibility is to your flock. If the owner of the dog isn't going to control the animal, then you need to control the animal in order to protect your birds. Yes I agree with the idea of billing your neighbor for damages to your run and the loss of a rooster. I would go as far as also filing a police report and let the police talk to the neighbor.

As to your coop, I have two words. HOT WIRE! The sooner the better. All it will take is one touch with a curious dog nose and the problem will be permanently solved. If you want to make sure the dog touches the wire with it's nose, bait it with peanutbutter or a half a slice of bacon draped over the wire and covered with tin foil. With the peanutbutter, you smear some on a rectangle of tin foil and fold the tin foil over the wire peanut butter side in. This is the best dog deterant I have ever encountered and it works. Our dogs will not go near our coop and run thanks to the hot wire we have 4-6 inches above the ground. All it took was one touch and suddenly you would think our birds were snipers hiding in the bushes ready to wage war on all canines.

Good luck with your problem neighbor. I think we have all had one of those at one time or another.

I just installed some hotwire yesterday and the dog came back and got shocked... Haven't seen it since. Thanks for all the advice I will look into the billing for the loss of eggs and rooster.

It does not take much to make so wire is neither an eye sore nor obstructs access to pen when doing chores for birds.
