Hey guys i posted about having trouble with my 4 month pup about potty training and training in genral well turns out hes deaf. Has anybody dealt with this for young pups have only had problems with old dogs but could definitely use some advice.

I know some people train them to a vibration collar to get their attention, they do a quick buzz to get their attention and when the dog looks at them they give it a treat.

Oh I like that Idea cause I do have training collars just have to wait to months although now that I am thinking out loud I probably could use them since I dont use the shock

I've seen the collar thing recommended before, my deaf dogs never wanted to be far enough away they couldn't see me, it seemed like they always had an eye on me.

My mother had a deaf Maltese. She trained it to sign language but since I wasn't around that much at the time I can't tell you how.

I was going to suggest hand gestures or even sign language. You would have to teach the meaning of the gestures by signing/gesturing then also showing at the same time the meaning of each. Make sure everyone uses the same exact sign/gestures so she understands and doesn't get confused. The earlier the better.

First, congratulations on working with your deaf puppy. Many people won't take the time or make the effort to work with an "imperfect" pet.

I've had both deaf dogs and blind dogs, and to me, a blind dog is easier to train. However, I was able to teach Cash, the deaf dog, with hand gestures. For example, making an "applause" gesture while giving a small treat tells the dog he or she did a good thing -- like making potty outdoors.

And, the one time he slipped out the back door ahead of me and unleashed -- at night, of course -- I kept flipping the outdoor lights on and off to get his attention so he could see where to come home. And, he did.

Hand signals are actually easier to teach than verbal cues so you will be fine I think. Never buy from this breeder again.

Training collars or hand gestures would work well. We had a yellow lab that we had bought. He was deaf and blind although we didnt keep him because we live on a busy highway, the vet said to use a training collar once he was old enough.
