Dear chicken know-it-alls,

I love it when someone who has been breeding whatever species for a few years and memorizes the color genetics chart and decides they are experts because then can quote the chart verbatim. Ummm, great, now lets talk about type, conformation, breed standards, and when you are creating weak colors because the chart says it should always be.......Argggg... This is particularly bad in rabbits.

I have just been bitten by the Bitter Breeder Bug...again. I know there is a need for breeders to keep the various breeds separate and distinct. And I know they are a valuable help to those of us that "know-nothing". But...there has GOT to be a better way to teach us, than dragging the "hatchery" bird through the grinder!

Those non-standard birds lay just as well, and are just as beloved by their people as your Breed Perfect animal! I LIKE getting my birds from a hatchery. They can give me a beautiful animal in a quantity that serves my needs at a price I can afford. Why do I care what the difference is between an Ameraucana and an EE? All I want is a bird that consistently lays nice brown eggs, Looks pretty and stays healthy, giving me enjoyment and perhaps a little coinage in my pocket at the end of the day.

If I ask you the breed, I don't need a long explanation of why the creature is what it is...just tell me the breed or mix and let it go! I don't need for you to degrade the hatchery that I got it from. Like my human children, I don't care that it might not be perfect. I love it anyway.

If I ask you what the difference is between what I have and what you have, fine...tell me all the details, but please be nice to what I have in the process. Non-breed perfect does not equal inferior. Just different.

I know exactly what you mean. Why do you think I haven't even asked what colors people think my chickens are?

I just want to know for curiosity sake. I don't want to hear about how their necks are too long or their backs aren't short enough. EEEGADS. I just think they are cute!

ETA: nevermind, I had a comment about know it alls but why bother!

I know, right?!!! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE learning about chickens, and I appreciate the time and energy some people put into preserving breeds for posterity... a lot of people on here have been very kind and generous with their time and knowledge, and they are the salt of the earth. But others can't seem to be proud of their accomplishments without denigrating someone else's beloveds! I mean, three of my favorite birds are mutts that resulted from a love affair between my little golden laced bantam cochin pullet and my white silkie roo. They are five toed, with swept back "Saturday Night Fever" top knots, black and white splashed, MUTTS ... and I think they're gorgeous! They have personality, energy, and they make me laugh ... a priceless quality in an often challenging world. So I really have to question the sanity of anyone who can't see the value in them. To me they're priceless...
