death after mating

One of my 8-month old Chantecler hens died today. Earlier in the day, I was in the coop and saw our rooster mating with her - looked like a normal mating - short and not so sweet. I thought it was odd when she didn't get back up afterwards - though she was alive.

When I came back later, she wasn't.

These birds have all been very healthy, including her - as far as I could tell. They eat an organic layer mash and scraps, and have been doing really well and laying well.

The only other thing that has seemed off recently is that one of the roosting birds had black poop in the last day. Does anyone know if this is associated with disease?

Or is it possible that she was injured in the mating process? Does that ever happen?

Thanks so much for any advice you can give.

Laura

I suppose it's possible he broke her neck, but I don't have a clue other than that.

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks everyone! This morning my remaining 12 hens are still looking very perky and are ravenous. It's just hard to believe that it was disease that got that beautiful hen yesterday.

So maybe my rooster did break her neck during mating. And he was the gentle one! (We ate the other roo after he wouldn't stop attacking me.) I hope he doesn't keep doing this.

I appreciate your responses - thanks again.
