What is the climate where you live? Is it summertime and hot or very cool? New chickens exposed to your soil may get coccidiosis, an intestinal disease from the soil and poop. It is more common in warm and wet weather. In hot weather they can become dehydrated and suffer from heat exhaustion, or be bullied away from water or food.

Can you get some Corid or amprollium to treat the others for coccidiosis, especially if you see another chicken acting lethargic or sleepy?

Sorry for your loss, but the only way to know for sure what the cause of death was, was to get a necropy or chicken autopsy. When a chicken separates itself or does not come out of the coop, they are most likely showing signs of illness.
