Hi there,

My family is coming up on our first year raising chickens and it has definitely been an eye opener for someone who has never owned chickens. We have Rhode Island Reds, Columbian Rocks, Barred Rocks, and a couple Black copper Marans. I live in a colder climate, so this has been a struggle and we have made some plans to change our set up to better address this. Just wanted to say hi.

Nice to have you here! Beautiful flock!
I suggest to replace the chicken wire with hardware cloth, 1/2 inch. It’s more expensive but chicken wire will not keep predators out, they’ll just tear and stretch it and ‘walk right in’.
Lots to learn especially the first year. Make adjustments based on your experience and ask questions :)

This window is inside the run, so no predators have access. Run has hardware cloth on bottom two feet.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Such beautiful chickens! Thanks for sharing.

You mention having issues dealing with the cold. Not sure where you live, but we use Cozy Coop radiant heaters in the growout pen hutches. That keeps several chickens warm safely. You could move their roost away from the window and hang one or two of those behind it. Just an idea!

We're glad you're here!
