Hi all. If you haven't guessed my name is Debbie.
I live in Southeasten CT and have had chickens on and off since I was a kid. My family was originally from NYC and had no experience with farming but none the less one has to start somewhere so my parents bought a house with an old barn, a beauty that was 350 yrs old on 13 acres of land and jumped right in as we gradually acquired various animals and learned as we went. I recall enjoying watching the hen's and being terrorized by the few roosters we had who used to chase us as they guarded their flock. Our neighbors who had more experience and were actually farmers offered to reduce our flock and promptly captured and cooked two of our roosters and returned one to us fully cooked, beautiful and delicious. I had no problem eating the terrorist rooster but no saw first hand how things went on the farm. Our flock was more manageable and the lone rooster was a bit less ' cocky', lol. We had ponies, horses, cows, pigs and rabbits and many enjoyable and memorable times growing up in a farming community.
Now, I like in a small neighborhood in the woods with a small lot but I've had RI reds for a couple yrs. But when they stopped laying I put them in the freezer and learned what one definition of " a tough old bird" might mean when I tried to cook and eat the old bird. Thus time around I have a mixed flock of Buff Orpingers, Silver Wyandotts, RI reds, and Black Stars. I also have 25 Cornish crosses in a chicken tractor for meat birds that will go in the freezer at 12 weeks and not 4 yrs old!. They should be better this time around.
Anyhow, I plan do do a lot more research and am looking forward to learning a lot more about chickens and enjoying the whole small homestead process.
That's all for now folks. I look forward to learning from this community and also enjoying the humor and the experience. Take care! Cluck- cluck!
