What a great site with a huge amount of information available. I'm up here in Central Maine and am a first time chicken addict. Really wanted chickens for fresh eggs, but with all the different breeds of birds available I also want pretty to look at. Having a great time shopping and thinking and reading and learning.
Snow needs to hurry up and melt away, we have coops to build, pens to construct and hens to enjoy!

Welcome to BYC!

Great that you finally decided to join our flock!

Lots of good breeds out there. I am partial to the Orpington Breeds. They are so docile, friendly and are great layers. You might want to check these 2 external breeds pages for some quick info on the different breeds out there...

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sure agree that spring can show up any time now, enough with the snow! TwoCrows gave you some great links on picking breeds. A couple more breeds to look at might be the Wyandottes and Plymouth Rocks, they come in a bunch of really pretty colors, Speckled Sussex are another, and don't forget Easter Eggers or Ameraucana for the blue/green eggs.

Thank you for the warm welcome. The shared off site pages are great. Thank you for taking the time to do that.
We actually have decided on a breed or two (well okay several) that we like. We are sticking to multi purpose breeds so if all else fails we have meat in the freezer. I have always loved the bar rock hens so those were a must have. Then the Wyandottes were tantalizing with their neat feather patterns. I know from nursery stock I am not going to get show birds but maybe down the line if I have to have them I will look into buying from Fowleys or something.
I lurked the BYC pages for a few months before I joined. I used this site a lot for research. What better way to find out stuff then from educated discussions, right?
