Decisions, decisions...Buying hatching eggs and flock management

Once I got a pretty top of the line rooster. The lady had paid a pretty penny for a dozen eggs of this breed. 8 hatched - 100% roosters.

I tried the hatching eggs - got 0% hatch.

Good luck,

Mrs K

Silver Double Laced Barnevelders! Yes, I want one too!! Just one pretty hen, that’s all. I found a place in my state that has hatching eggs. Maybe later this year. I’ve got to sort out all the juveniles I have now and some other things before I can, though.

I know an excellent breeder in North Carolina, that's where I want them from.

They also have Swedish Flowers!
I don't want a lot, I can get other breeds to pad out my flock.

Hatching chicks is amazingly fun and addicting!
I say have fun with it. Order the breeds you want and hope for the best.
Just be prepared for rehoming/dispatching roosters and finding homes for extra hens. I have a few great homes lined up for any extra pullets/hens we do not want and we are ok with freezer camp for the cockerels.

My numbers:
Total of 43 eggs set thus far
25 hatched under broodys (where they all were set)
6 we had to hatched (which we were NOT prepared for!)
8 pullets
14 cockerels
8 still unknown

Just try to be prepared for all situations and have fun!
