Today I went outside to give my chickens some water. I accidentally left the door open to their area and two of my four chickens got out. One 14 week old rooster named Finn and a 14 week old hen named Loraine. When I caught Finn I noticed he had a deep cut on his beak right in front of his comb. The wound didn't look fresh and had some dried blood in it. I didn't know what to do so I brought him inside and put some Vaseline on it. Later after I put back outside and he started crowing, this wouldn't be significant, but he hadn't been crowing for a few days now. I'm really worried about him. In the pen with him and Loraine are two one year old cochins. What should I do to make sure he heals, is it serious?

If he is eating okay, it is probably not causing him much pain and the beak is likely structurally sound. It should heal fine after a while. I suppose a little triple antibiotic ointment or neosporin wouldn't hurt just to ensure not infection takes hold (but the wound doesn't look too deep. I have read threads in which chickens healed from even worse beak injuries, so I hope he does well.

Thanks for your help he is feeling alot better and is a happier chicken :)
