Deep litter finishing in a gizzard. Or is it?

I've decided to use the deep litter method in the coop so I added an inch or two of wood shavings to the floor.
Now, when I open the birds gizzard it seems to be stuffed with the shavings. Did anyone else experienced this?

I did, we found shavings in the crop of a few of our meat birds.

What is your stance on it?

Does it slow down the birds growth or have some other side effect?
