Deep litter method Vs. Traditional Cleaning

So exactly what did you start with? What do you add? And specifically, do you *have to turn the poop into the bedding or can you remove some?

I would do deep litter method (or a pseudo deep litter up to 1 foot of bedding) if the entrances to my coop weren't at ground level. If I tried it now then the litter would all just pour out the door and run entrance when I walk in.

I just kept mine raked towards the other areas of the coop...mainly under the roosts and living areas but away from the door. It works. Even with a lip on my current coop, I have to fork the DL away from the door on occasion due to them shoveling it up against the doorway in their enthusiasm for the bug life they are finding under there.

I do the deep liter method and I like the results.I occasionally have taken out some of the deep liter for my gardens and this has worked good.I do plan on doing a thorough cleaning hopefully within the next week or sccasionally I will get a slight odor in my coop but that's because when it snows and they won't go out there is more poop.It isn't strong and doesn't stay around long.All I use is coarse pine shavings. I use it in my nest boxes also and it does great.I haven't done a thorough cleaning in the last 2 years or so.I want the liter for my gardens and the inside has gotten right dirty and dusty.The DL does it's job and I need to do mine in keeping the coop half decent.The liter gets behind the door and makes it hard to open and I do move it back but they keep kicking it against the door.

Do you use the deep litter just in the coop or in the entire run? I was picturing it in the entire run until I read this.
