Deep litter method

I'm still window shopping with growing interest.

What an amazingly cool thread. I was reading through and noticed how this thread is exactly like it's own title - slowly processing new/raw materials (members new to this site or information, bringing their questions) into usable processed materials (beneficial information - with input from more seasoned and experienced members) .

Oh yeah...
DE = Diamotaceous Earth

I never run out of things to read on here. DL works very well on most other birds too, its even keeping my ducks and geese clean, dry and warm. thats a huge plus!

DUcks too? THat is my biggest problem. THey seem to get everything wet and yucky, so I change the litter A LOT!! May just need a little more work, with different material. ANy suggestions. I started with shavings and dried leaves.
Ugh yes they are messy, geese too! They will stick ther heads in the buckets and fling water everywhere! I use the regular pine bedding, and collect the dry needles with my leaf sweeper too, as well as other leaves. I use the DE, and also stall dry/sweet PDZ and just keep adding layers. I do a good end to end cleanup once a year, and I dont water inside the coops ever, they can go out to the run day and nite if they need it. If the temps get low enough, below 0, i will add an indoor heated bucket just to be safe tho. If we do get that cold i have a stationary lamp that can accept a heat bulb, but its going to be pretty cold before i use it. (i have had -70 wind chills here thats just awful) We rarely see below single digit temps but it does happen.

With ducks I'd use more shavings than leaves....need more absorbency for their liquid poops!

Hehe, you are so right! The FF helps a lot with the poo, its made a big difference inside the coop also.
I look forward to getting the waterfowl seperated soon, its going to make it a lot easier. I have at least 12 bales of large pine shavings in there now.

hi, i've been using DLM in my 8x12' run quite successfully since summer, in our previous rains it hasn't gotten wet at all, but now we've had something like 6 straight days of hard rain & quite a lot of wind, and the litter is now completely soaked through. is it likely to dry out again and be okay, or should i take action of some kind to avoid mold?

thanks for any advice you may have!
laura
