Deep litter method

So many comments just because of this

Our coop is so "clean" that a Vegan friend, and a vegetarian neighbor (who only eats certified humane eggs), love eating our chicken eggs.

I find it kinda funny(and entertaining) one comment can bring so many opinions...

Anyway...
I prefer to be called be called a meatatarian.. Give me a good steak, (Rib eye, porterhouse, T-bone) , bleeding a little on the plate, a potato with some salt, pepper and butter. I am happier then a rooster with 3 dozen hens. Bu then again who can afford them kind of cuts? Not me..

(I hope I didn't offend anyone with my graphic description of my perfect meal)
What happened to the deep litter thread,,,,,, This is Making me hungry

I'm with you, Madddawg, and I'd be sitting right beside you devouring that steak and tater, with maybe some veggie on the side.

My run is basically built and the upper half and top need to be screened in and my entry door built. It looks like four 8x8 squares joined together, but it is actually one large area with a small 4x8 section screened off for my Chicken TV observation deck. The whole thing is only 5-ft tall.

If the litter is deep enough, those bottom 2x6 boards will be covered making it a seamless open area. Those bottom 2x6 boards are for structural support, and the whole thing is pretty steady.

I keep redesigning my coop, so it hasn't been built yet.

Check it out...

The opening to the left of the deck will be the door/gate. The upper square behind the roll of hardware cloth will be a tilt-out door to throw some treats in there without actually having to go into the run. Oh, I also swapped out the park bench for a porch glider love seat and two end tables (still in the boxes). I know this should be in the coop/run forum, but wanted to share my design from scratch and how the deep litter method would work for me.

There is about a two-inch layer of sand in the run right now and am debating about leaving it in there.

Okay, another essay off the beaten path, but I'm enjoying all the reviews on this deep litter thang from all you folks...the pros and cons. Thanks so much for all you contribute. --BB

If you can remove it, I wouldn't leave the sand there. Not many bugs or worms live or like to pass through gritty, sharp sand to reach the nutrients in the DL. It may be counter productive to your efforts to develop a working DL in there.

I put a couple more carts of wood chips in the run today. The kids loved the pile I left while I went for another load!

and for the record, and being from GA, Beekissed, I LOVED the sweet southern accent! I also would like to say thank you for a job well done on the video and the explanation, and thanks to blooie for for putting it in another thread which lead me here.

I am planning it for my run for sure, since I have a wood floor in the coop, it will be cleaned out occasionally, but I am using it in there as well. Going on three weeks and no smell in there either. When it comes time to clean the coop out, those contents will come out to the run

Bekissed, thanks to you, I had the wisdom today to take 5 leaf size trash bags of lawn scrap from a friend who was putting it out to the curb. Primo stuff. Has all the goodies yours has. 5 big bags of DL gold. I also have enough of my own spare soil to make a base and then woohoo, the chickipoos will be walking on sunshine. Thanks so much, again.

Now, see, Miss Bee? Your video is extremely helpful, and just like those of us who saw it before it was posted here, folks think your accent is adorable!
if memory serves me correctly, I think I told you that in the other thread you posted it in, LOL
