Deep litter method

Bekissed, thanks to you, I had the wisdom today to take 5 leaf size trash bags of lawn scrap from a friend who was putting it out to the curb. Primo stuff. Has all the goodies yours has. 5 big bags of DL gold. I also have enough of my own spare soil to make a base and then woohoo, the chickipoos will be walking on sunshine. Thanks so much, again.

I also followed the link to the youtube and I believe I subscribed. You know when you go to youtube there's always some 'suggested' videos to watch, man some of those people are clueless.......

do you have much problems with mice or rats?

I haven't. But then I hate those little boogers so much that I used 1/4 inch hardware cloth all around my run and coop to keep them out. Mice don't need much of an opening at all to make entry!

Blooie I was thinking that too but then thought about if Im leaving the coop door to the run during the day, well thats like putting a lock on a door and not using it. Frig it. I'm just building this coop like its a horse stall and using the wire I have over the top half. Its inside the barn. The chickens will kill anything that comes in there. I'm not getting wrapped around the axle over it anymore. Keeping it simple, and cheaper. I'll make sure the food is secure and the water is fresh.

My run has just as much hardware cloth around it as my coop does, so leaving the pop door open between them 24/7 makes no difference. I figure if they can't get into the run it stands to reason that they can't get into the coop from there either!

But I sure know what you mean about just going with what you've got and keeping it simple!

eagrbeavr the only issue I really see with that is rats or mice. They can and will chew on the chickens while they sleep at night. feathers, legs, feet..........they can do some damage to a flock no doubt. I do agree with the chickens will take care of what they see during the day though, it's night time that worries me

Funny you should mention that. I thought of it soon after I posted my last. As George Constanza said, 'Why does there always have to be a problem!!' Still mulling things over. Need to make up my mind in the next couple weeks and get their home outside done. I'll mull over the possibilities vs probabilities. Mice havent been an issue in the summer. I may change what I'm doing when Fall sets in. Decide what I can live with that will let me sleep at night. I'm surely not putting up hardware cloth for the run. That I know.I plan on my run being about 70x 13'. That makes for pretty expensive eggs.

these are going to be the most expensive eggs you've ever had anyway, LOL but I do see your point with it being that big
