Deep litter method

Here's a pic of my girls going to town on the deep litter. It's a little dry in this pic. Luckily we got some much needed rain after I took it. If we hadn't had enough that rained in from the open sides of the run I'd have gone out and sprayed it with the hose a bit. That's the only maintenance I do lately. That and tossing in some yard waste every once in a while. I haven't scooped a poop in 3 months and I've got no smell or flies at all. We're getting our hot and humid weather now but you can stand right next to the coop and all you smell is mulch. If you look close you can see wood chips, straw, hay, shavings and some corn husks and cobs.

I used to have sand. Got a horrible stink in the spring when the rain and snow melt saturated the ground. I'd scooped nice dry sand twice a day all winter long and still had an odor issue once it got wet. Won't ever go back to sand. But I digress... Here's the pic.

I have a dirt floor bottom to part of my coop/run and I'm coop training currently. Should I be including the dirt floor in my deep litter?

Hum. . . not sure what you mean. I have only dirt floors and that works the best for deep litter since the micro-organisms in the dirt help to break down the litter.

^^what she said!^^

I added a good pile of grass clippings to my run yesterday, at least something good came of having to wait 2 weeks for lawn mower parts to come in, LOL

Update!
In case anyone is still unsure about using DLM...
I was out doing some improvements in my coop today. My next door neighbor was working in her yard, and motioned me over to her. As i approached, she asked "How often do you clean your coop?" At first I panicked! Was this the moment people start complaining and I have to rehome our birds? I decided it was best to be honest. I told her that the short answer is "I don't." Then I waited while she looked at me all squinty-eyed.

Turns out her son mows yards for some folks down the road. One of the clients has chickens. Apparently said chickens smell really bad.

She was trying to figure out why our birds don't stink! She's constantly outside. Mows like every other day. We've had ridiculous amounts of rain. Even with all the moisture, she can't smell our coop!

I did a lil happy dance as I returned to my coop :)
