DEEP LITTER Questions...

What's the problem with wood chips? Not enough surface area to make the carbon available?

Ironically the opposite, wood offers excess carbon in a concentrated area and thus slows down composting...

The readily available carbon to nitrogen needs to be balanced, but a few wood chips are good for is creating air space and voids to prevent compacting...

You want to aim for a 25:1 or 30:1 carbon:nitrogen ratio in your deep litter just like you do for a compost heap...

So how did the deep litter in cement structure worK? I've got a crew about to build a foundation for my 9x5 "garden coop"( raised hen house in an enclosed run with roof over open air hardwire walls and top. they are using Holland pavers for floor with an enclosed 2' concrete manor stone wall foundation that I intend to fill with deep litter method.
