Hello-we are in the process of deciding what type of bedding to use in our chicken coop run. We had a coop built and the builder makes it predator proof by placing galvanized hardware cloth on the base of the run. We have researched and asked around and are interested in using the deep litter method. My question is this: do we need to put our coop on a base such as gravel for drainage purposes (we are putting the coop and run over earth) or is an earth floor preferred for the deep littler method? I have a book that says that an earth base is best for this method. It says that the microbes can move freely from the soil through the bedding. Now I hope that this process can happen with the hardware cloth as the floor.
Thank you in advance. I'm full of questions today. !
