Deep Thoughts For A Special Hen!

This is the story about our special girl that I included in my member interview and a picture of her in her private run (it was attached from the big run the other girls used):

One of our very first girls, a Rhode Island Red named Taylor, is our “special needs” chicken. When she was around 4 months old, she turned up lame one morning. Taylor spent 3 months on our enclosed front porch sitting next to my chair being nursed back to health. She got stronger every day and even laid her first egg on that porch. Her lameness prevents her from roosting and every attempt to integrate her back into the flock ended up badly for her so she has her own mini-coop next to the big coop and her own private run next to the other girls (with plenty of anti-peck protection). She has become especially attached to my husband and they have long winded chats about the weather, politics and the state of the economy.

We had Taylor almost 3 years and she was a joy. I'm so thankful we had time with her.

@thudson as attached as you are to your 'regular' birds, I think you'll find there's something even more heartwarming about the special ones.

We are truly blessed to have a place such as the BYC. You all have helped me so much especially with this situation with my Anabel. I can honestly say I can put my mind at ease and know for a fact there are several people out there who feel the way I do about my flock family. Thank All of you so much. Good luck with all of your flock families!

So glad you found us here at BYC. We completely understand how you feel. Many of us have been in your situation, we know and understand how you feel. Mostly our chickens are family and pets. We treaty our girls the same way other non chicken people would treat their pets. All would do whatever they could to help a special pet. Best wishes to you and Annabel. She is such a sweetheart.

Well it is with a heavy heart my Anabel passed away today. I guess she made it as long as she could. She apparently died resting this morning because she was in the same position in her coop when I left for work. My heart is breaking but she brought me so much joy it is so hard to say goodbye. But that is life, I guess in a way she didn't want me to worry so no more. So thanks everyone for all your help.

I am so sorry. She had a wonderful life. I know she hated to leave you. You took such great care of her. She was as very blessed to have you. :hugs
