deer hunting

My dad always says that the first thing he does after a kill is gut it and stuff it with snow (or ice that he brings with if its not snowy yet) then commences with whatever field dressing he's going to do on the spot. Cooling it down right away along with not letting the animal run before (or after for those who take more than one shot) killing are what I was taught are the number one ways of keeping it from being gamey and tough.

My husband and I both deer hunt and bow season is just around the corner. We are excited, and brushing up on a few skills, practicing every evening, remembering back to last year's first hunt and gearing up! This will be my sixth year hunting. Happy Harvesting to all hunters and keep safe.

Whether the deer is dropped in it's tracks or tracked down, hot or cold as soon as the deer has been found and passed on, the deer is field dressed. If it is cold enough, the deer is left outside to hang until the end of the hunting day but if it is warm/hot after the game has been field dressed, the deer is packed in ice until the end of the hunting day. We do our own processing and the meat has never tasted "gamey". Happy Harvesting!
